Displaying your search results
The CCH Internet Research NetWork allows you to choose from three
different search results views:
|
- Display by Table of Contents-Show All- This option displays your search
results directly on your Internet Research Library tabs and indicates the
number of "hits" (documents containing your search term(s)) right next to the
libraries, publications and topics in which they are found. It enables you to
see where your "hits" fall within the publication. You can then go
directly to a document view or drill down to the next Table of Contents menu
level.
|
|
- Display by Table of Contents- Hits Only- This option works the
same as "Display by Table of Contents-Show All" except it will hide
all of the publications and topics that do not contain "hits". This means that you will not see them on your screen so
they are inaccessible.
|
|
- Display by Document- This option allows you to view a combined list of documents from all the different publications and topics
that you searched. The list may be sorted by relevance if you choose.
|
| TIP: Click
here for instructions on how to change your default search results view in
Preference Settings. |
Step 1— Select the publications
| NOTE: In
the example below, we first view the search results via "Display by
Document" and then switch to "Display by Table of Contents-Hits
Only." |
Conduct a search as you normally would. First check the desired publication(s) or topic(s) that you want to search.
Step 2— Type your search term(s)
Type your search term(s) in the search expression field.

Step 3—Choose how you would like to display
your search results
| TIP:
First view your search results in the traditional documents
list and then switch to "Display by Table of Contents-Hits Only" and/ or
"Display by Table of Contents-Show All" to see how they each compare and
which display option works best for you. |
Click the button
if your search results display is not
already set to "Display by Document." Choose "Display by
Document" from the drop down menu. Then
click the button. Your search results are
displayed in a document listing.
Step 4—Switch between different search
results views
To display the
search results in a Table of Contents view, choose "Display by Table of
Contents-Hits Only" or "Display by Table of Contents-Show All"
from the drop down menu in the box at the top of the page.
In the example below, we chose "Display by Table of Contents-Hits
Only." The number of "hits" are displayed in brackets next to the publications
and topics--both are bright blue and hyperlinked.
You will only see the publications and topics that contain "hits". If
you choose "Display by Table of Contents-Show All",
publications and topics with zero "hits" will also be visible and accessible.
Please note: Table of Contents views will only show results of up to 9,999
hits. After reaching 9,999, the other publications or topics will display 0
hits. For best results, refine your search by selecting less publications/topics
and/or entering more specific search term(s).
You can proceed one of two ways:
1) Click once on the publication hyperlink.
This will allow you to see where your
"hits" are located within the publication. The topics with "hits" will be bright blue with the number of hits to the right.
OR
2) Click once on the icon
to view a document list.
This will display a list of
only those documents containing "hits" within that specific publication
or
topic.
In this example, there are 816 documents that contain "hits."
Step 5 —Search within your results list
If you want to search within your results displayed in a Table of Contents
view,
simply indicate which publications you would like to search by checking them
(or
unchecking the topics you no longer wish to search). Then enter your new
search term(s) in the search expression field and click the button.
Step 6—Begin a brand new search
To begin a new search, click on the button.
