On July 17, the world's largest
toymaker and maker of the Barbie doll, Mattel, prevailed on its claim that the
maker of the Bratz doll, MGA Entertainment, infringed its copyright when it
hired a doll designer away from Mattel in 2000. As a result of the verdict by a
jury in the federal district court in Riverside, California, Mattel could
receive millions in back royalties, and maybe even ownership of the successful
line of Bratz dolls that was launched by MGA in 2001. MGA has vowed to appeal
the decision.
